Port skills audits

Understanding and maintaining workforce capability is essential to safe and efficient port operations. The PSS Skills Audit supports ports in building a clear picture of their current capability, identifying gaps, and recommending practical steps to strengthen it over time.

Developed in response to common challenges across the port sector, the audit focuses on how training and competence are managed in practice across operational and safety-critical roles.

PSS auditors assess documentation and undertake interviews with both leadership and operational employees to:

  • Review existing training and competence arrangements, including how competence is defined and managed.
  • Assess alignment between the training matrix, relevant standards and guidance, and how these are applied in operational practice.
  • Identify areas of good practice and opportunities for improvement, with clear and practical recommendations.

As the professional skills and safety membership organisation for ports, PSS draws on insights from audits to develop a broader understanding of good practice and emerging themes across the sector. This also informs sector-level recommendations that support continuous improvement, while maintaining the confidentiality of individual organisations.

Skills audits typically include up to two day of desk-based preparation, up to two days on-site, and a final report with a presentation of findings. Specific requirements and an audit plan are prepared in advance with the company.

All audits are charged at a daily rate, with travel and accommodation charged at cost. PSS also offers a limited audit service to non-members. Contact us for more information.
