PSS is delighted to welcome Kevin Robinson as the new fishing port safety manager, looking after our new project aimed at improving safety in ports that welcome fishers or import and export fish.

The initial one-year fishing port safety project, supported by a grant from The Seafarers’ Charity, will work with PSS members and non-member ports to encourage the sharing of common safety concerns, best practice and see whether additional Safety in Ports guidance is needed for handling fish.

Kevin comes from a Hull fishing family, with the industry having been a part of his life for as long as he can remember.

“The sights, the smells, the traditions and the way of life, meant that the sea was never far away from my thoughts and helped to shape my future from an early age,” he recalls.

Kevin began his career as a superintendent for a fishing company, planning and supervising the loading and unloading of fish cargoes around the UK and overseas, and later progressed into more general freight movements. He has recently returned from a stint in Saudi Arabia working as the head of technical training for a ports and logistics academy.

“I am delighted to now focus on the important issue of safety within UK fishing ports,” Kevin added.

“I know from first-hand experience, the effects of accidents on and around fishing vessels and I am looking forward to working with PSS and The Seafarer’s Charity, to engage with the fishing community to find ways in which we can reduce risks to fishers whilst in port.

“The fishing industry is a significant contributor to the UK economy and fishing activities help to sustain thriving communities in many coastal towns. It is, therefore, in everyone’s interest to ensure that those involved in fishing and its associated activities, are afforded a safe and secure environment in which to work and I welcome the opportunity to help us achieve this goal.”

Kevin will be launching a fishing port safety group with an online meeting on Tuesday 29 April at 14.00. To attend this meeting or get in touch with Kevin to discuss the project in more detail, email info@portskillsandsafety.co.uk
