Northern Ireland launches first Port Operations apprenticeship framework

The new Level 2 Port Operations apprenticeship framework has been launched in Northern Ireland, providing the region’s port employers with a dedicated apprenticeship for operational roles for the first time.

Funded by the Department for Economy and available through ApprenticeshipsNI, the apprenticeship supports workforce development across the maritime and logistics sector.

Developed through collaboration between Belfast Harbour, Belfast Metropolitan College, Port Training Services, and the Department for the Economy, the apprenticeship combines workplace learning with off-the-job training to help employers develop a competent workforce while providing apprentices with the knowledge and skills required for a career in port operations.

The apprenticeship includes five specialist pathways, reflecting the range of operational roles found within ports:

• Stevedoring Operations.
• Container operations.
• General Operations.
• Cruise and Ferry Terminal Operations.
• Marine Operations.

Apprentices must be employed from the start of the programme and complete both the required qualifications and essential skills as part of the framework.

The introduction of the framework provides employers in Northern Ireland with a structured route to recruit, develop, and retain skilled operational staff while supporting the future workforce needs of the port sector.
