Award Nomination:
The collaboration between Bristol Port and RoboK represents a ground breaking initiative aimed at revolutionising safety culture and operational efficiency within the port environment. Triggered by a near-miss incident in an operational shed where a forklift narrowly avoided a collision with a lorry driver, the partnership embarked on a journey to instil a long-term shift in behavioural safety practices. RoboK software, seamlessly integrated with CCTV systems already in place at the Port, which serves as a proactive safety measure, flagging potential dangers in real-time and identifying instances of bad practice, inadequate PPE, and near-misses. Leveraging data analytics, the software revealed a remarkable 95% reduction in incidents within the warehouse division within two months, showcasing its efficacy. (See graphs in supporting information.) Moreover, the introduction of cameras not only enforced good practices but also catalysed behavioural changes among staff, fostering a safety-conscious mindset. Bolstered by the initial success, Bristol Port and RoboK expanded their collaboration, with further cameras in other warehouses and plans to implement port-wide safety measures in the future. Over 6-9 months, the collaborative efforts succeeded in creating a cultural shift, embedding safety consciousness into the fabric of the port’s warehousing operations. In summary the technology has been a complete game changer and has had the single biggest impact on improving safety at Bristol Port. None of this would have been possible without the collaboration of working in tight partnership with RoboK.
Additional Information:
The collaboration between Bristol Port and RoboK represents a pivotal step towards enhancing safety culture and operational efficiency within the port environment. This partnership was necessitated by a critical incident that underscored the need for proactive safety measures. The introduction of RoboK software marked a transformative journey aimed at instilling a long-term shift in the safety culture at Bristol Port.
The decision to implement RoboK software was prompted by a near-miss incident in an operational shed, based in Royal Portbury Dock, where a forklift narrowly avoided a collision with a lorry driver. This incident served as a wake-up call, highlighting the pressing need for enhanced safety protocols. Another operational shed had also witnessed multiple near-misses over the years, further emphasising the urgency of addressing safety concerns. In response, Bristol Port introduced four cameras in key areas, which were trialled by supervisors.
RoboK software, seamlessly integrated with the Port’s existing CCTV systems, serving as a proactive safety measure, flagging potential dangers in real-time. The system is connected to a dashboard for continuous monitoring, which identifies instances of bad practice, inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE), unsafe entries, and near-misses. By leveraging data analytics, the software enables the Port to compare incident rates before and after its implementation, so far it has revealed a remarkable 95% reduction in incidents within the warehouse division alone within 2 months. (See graphs in supporting information.)
The introduction of cameras has not only enforced good practices but has also catalysed behavioural changes among staff. Rather than simply reprimanding employees, the focus has shifted towards providing education and fostering a safety-conscious mindset. Staff members now exercise greater caution before entering warehouse areas, contributing to a safer working environment.
Buoyed by the success of the initial phase, Bristol Port and RoboK expanded their collaboration, introducing more cameras and software in other sheds and key areas of the port. This phased approach aligns with a broader vision to implement port-wide safety measures in the future. Over a span of 6-9 months, of the software being implemented, the collaborative efforts has succeeded in effecting a cultural shift, embedding safety consciousness into the fabric of the port’s operations.
The adoption of RoboK technology not only enhances safety but also serves as a catalyst for broader safety initiatives within the port. By leveraging technology, Bristol Port demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement and proactive risk management. This collaborative endeavor not only safeguards the well-being of employees but also reinforces the port’s reputation as a leader in safety and innovation.
As technology continues to evolve, Bristol Port remains committed to harnessing cutting-edge solutions to further enhance safety standards. The partnership with RoboK underscores a shared dedication to embracing technological advancements for the collective benefit of all stakeholders. With a steadfast focus on safety, Bristol Port and RoboK pave the way for a safer and more efficient port environment, setting a precedent for the maritime industry as a whole.
