On 22nd August 2020, a fifteen year old girl died when the RIB she was on collided with a buoy in Southampton Water. The impact caused her and all but one of the passengers to suffer serious internal injuries including broken limbs, fractured vertebrae, and a punctured lung. For the past nine months, the Maritime Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) have been examining the events leading up the tragic accident and have recently published their interim report detailing their recommendations to avoid a similar incident from occurring again. This includes the recommendation that all UK operators of high speed craft, including RIB vessels and other fast commercial boats, review their risk assessments to ensure compliance with the standards set by the Passenger Safety on Small Commercial High Speed Craft & Experience Rides voluntary Code of Practice.
