Vacancy: Lifting operations subject matter expert

Port Skills and Safety Ltd is a membership organisation focused on improving safety and skills across the port sector.
We are undertaking a six-month project to develop a lifting operations standard and associated competency framework. We are seeking a Subject Matter Expert in lifting operations to work closely with the project lead to shape, test, and refine draft content throughout development, acting as a critical technical sounding board.
This is a consultative role within the project timeline. The expected commitment is typically two days per week to the end of August during the drafting phase, with a further five days allocated to support refinement of the work following member feedback. The project will include at least one in-person stakeholder engagement session.

Key responsibilities:
- Review desk-based research and draft materials, providing critical input to ensure alignment with real-world port operations.
- Advise on the practical application of lifting operations requirements across a range of port environments, including complex and non-routine lifts.
- Support the development of role-specific competency requirements, ensuring they reflect operational responsibilities and decision-making in practice.
Qualifications and experience:
- Significant, demonstrable experience in lifting operations within the port sector.
- Strong working knowledge of UK legislation and standards relevant to lifting operations, including LOLER and PUWER.
- Experience of complex lifting environments, including vessel operations, heavy or non-routine lifts, and multi-party coordination.
- Experience contributing to standards, competency frameworks, or training materials would be advantageous.
