PSS welcomes retention of maritime apprenticeships

PSS welcomes Skills England’s decision to retain the Marine Pilot Level 5 and Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember Level 3 apprenticeships, following proposals to retire them.
PSS consulted members and submitted detailed evidence in response to both consultations. The responses set out the need to retain recognised, employer-led training routes for specialist, safety-critical maritime roles and reflected the operational needs of ports and the wider maritime industry.
For marine pilots, PSS highlighted the importance of a structured route that supports the development of the specialist knowledge, professional judgement, and operational experience required for the role. Its response on the Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember apprenticeship set out the value of the standard in supporting skilled crews across port and marine operations, including towage, marine services, and offshore-related activity.
PSS Skills, Careers and Diversity Lead, Angela Ward said: “This outcome demonstrates the value of employers and maritime stakeholders working together to provide clear, practical evidence. That collaboration is vital if training routes are to remain relevant to the needs of the sector.”
Skills England also confirmed that the Marina and Boatyard Operative, Officer of the Watch, and Seafarer (Deck Rating) apprenticeships will be retained.
The decision recognises the continued need for apprenticeships that help employers develop a skilled maritime workforce and provide clear routes into the sector. PSS will continue to represent the needs of the port sector in future discussions on maritime skills and training.
