On 14 January, PSS Health, Safety and Culture Lead Jen Maddison, and Health, Safety and Environment Technician Apprentice Umayya Rahman visited the Port of Ramsgate for an audit and to learn more about its operations.

Jen and Umayya were met by Matthew Kenney, harbour master and marine operations manager at the Port of Ramsgate who provided a guided tour of the port and the Royal Marina. Jen and Umayya observed port activities, discussed health and safety procedures, and explored the systems in place to ensure operational safety.

Discussions continued over lunch outlining the health and safety aims and goals of the port, with Jen and Umayya providing suggestions to meet their goals to a higher degree.

The audit included a thorough review of policies, systems, and documentation, as well as an appraisal of the port’s infrastructure and environmental initiatives. Notable good practices included the use of sea bins for collection of floating waste in the marina, and a focus on employee wellbeing, with trained first aiders on site and access to services such as physiotherapy.

The visit also sparked a broader conversation about developing a proactive safety culture within ports. PSS will be developing a port-specific culture climate survey this year and members who would like to be involved in this, can get in touch.

Thanks to Matthew and the team at Port of Ramsgate for their hospitality and for providing valuable insights into their operations. PSS provides a range of audit services for member, for details visit Port HSE audits.
