NEXT GEN AMMONIA Workshop via TEAMS

2026 is proving to be a challenging year for many maritime sectors. There are 24/7 commercial pressures in port operations with the requirement for energy resilience rising. Following political instability in Europe and the Middle East, energy security and the drive for alternative fuels is urgent.

For marine it is now essential to establish which emerging fuels are viable, when will they be available and what will be required onshore. Ammonia has been carried as a cargo for 100 years. Ammonia as a marine fuel is now featuring as part of energy transition globally.

At NEXT GEN AMMONIA presenters and experts consider how ammonia can be used as a fuel in ICE, with applications ranging from main engines onboard vessels to onshore generators. Dynamic discussions will address the real challenges and opportunities for change.

NEXT GEN Workshop Lead, John Haynes, ‘Marine has a long history of using conventional engines with high focus on range and reliability along with availability of common fuels. We have asked a number of ports and maritime organisations what they need to know about adapting engines to run on ammonia. Their responses around safety, infrastructure and economics have been used to develop this programme.’

THEME: What are the Opportunities and Challenges for Ammonia as Marine Fuel?

  • SESSION 1: Hydrogen and Green Ammonia as Marine Fuels
  • SESSION 2: Ammonia Safety and Regulations in Port and on Vessels
  • SESSION 3: Scalability and Commercial Opportunities for Green Ammonia

The knowledge gained from NEXT GEN workshops helps to shape real world decisions, from modifying in-service vessels and upgrading safety systems to shaping requirements for fleets of the future. Attendees include commercial, government and military organisations, boat builders, technology developers, engineers, naval architects, class societies and legislators.

John Haynes added, ‘We are really pleased to be running NEXT GEN AMMONIA with the support of MariNH3. Commencing 2022, this international team of leading academic researchers has collaborated with 25 industry partners at the forefront of engine technology and support services. The MariNH3 group has developed disruptive engine technology and breakthroughs they will share publicly for the first time.’

NEXT GEN AMMONIA is a workshop via TEAMS, not a webinar, so places are limited. Attendees receive a CPD certificate. There is a discount for Military / Govt / SAR / Ports / RINA / IMarEST / PSS / UKHMA.
