My career in health and safety began in heavy engineering in 2000, working for a supply company in the North-East of England for the mine and quarry industries. During this time, I completed my NEBOSH National Diploma. I then moved to the leisure industry for several years, managing Health and Safety for a large region of the UK. As a health and safety practitioner, I always enjoyed the training element of the role and began working in training and consultancy from 2012 and completed my MSc in Occupational Safety Management at Loughborough University in 2016. I continue to provide training and consultancy services to date through my own company, Protecting People, while I have also completed my PhD in Organisational Health and Wellbeing in 2025. The PhD has helped me to understand the role of humour in health and safety training, and I strive to ensure that my training is relaxed, engaging and utilises humour.
I have been a chartered member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) since 2006 and continue to be involved with my local Tyne and Wear IOSH community in the UK.
