Award Nomination:
The Bristol Port Company has a proud history when it comes to developing apprentices. Being one of the first Ports in the world to adopt a Port Operations Apprenticeship Scheme to now almost 35 years later, proudly showcasing the current Apprentice Development Programme, an immersive initiative designed to shape the next generation of skilled, resilient and safety-focused port professionals.
Additional Information:
From day one, the programme moves beyond traditional training models. The Port not only combines structured learning with high-impact, real-world experiences that build technical capability but also develops the behaviours essential for success in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment. The apprentices in the program develop the confidence to perform under pressure, communicate effectively and work cohesively as part of a team, qualities that are fundamental to safe and efficient port operations at Bristol Port.
As part of the programme is a unique one-week residential experience aboard the Blyth Tall Ship. This unique experience allows apprentices to step into a completely different environment, taking on the responsibilities of a working crew. From watchkeeping and navigation to cooking, mooring and manually raising sails, every task demands focus, discipline and teamwork. This hands-on experience challenges individuals to step outside their comfort zones, fostering accountability, the need to adapt and a deep appreciation for safety and collaboration.
The Port further strengthens these core attributes through a partnership with Mendip Outdoor Activity Centre, delivering a bespoke residential development week. This carefully designed programme pushes apprentices both physically and mentally, testing resilience, leadership and communication through a series of demanding activities. These shared challenges build trust, strengthen relationships and instil a powerful sense of collective responsibility, key skills that will be needed to operate effectively in a high-risk environment.
Another key element to the program that truly makes it an amazing skills initiative is funding apprentices to enroll in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. This prestigious programme enhances personal development through volunteering, physical activity, and expedition challenges. To date, 11 apprentices have achieved Gold and received the honour of attending Buckingham Palace, with a further 31 currently progressing through the program, demonstrating both commitment and ambition across the cohort.
It is key to add that the Safety and Training team are at the heart of this journey, an approachable, dedicated network of mentors who guide and support each apprentice every step of the way. They provide not only expert knowledge, but also encouragement, reassurance and a consistent, friendly presence that helps individuals thrive. Deeply invested in every apprentice’s success, they take genuine pride in their achievements and are personally committed to inspiring confidence, unlocking potential and helping each individual realise their goals.
Together, these elements make the Port Apprentice Development Programme a standout initiative, developing individuals who are not only technically skilled, but also resilient, self-aware and team-focused. By combining practical experience with personal development, the Port prepares apprentices to excel in modern port operations and contribute to a strong safety culture and crucially shaping a safer future for the Port industry.
