Following the revision of the Port Marine and Facilities Safety Code (PMSC), the Embarkation and Disembarkation of Pilots – Code of Safe Practice, (known as the Boarding and Landing Code) has been updated.
The Code provides guidance for pilots, ports, and harbour authorities on topics including operating procedures, equipment, training, PPE, and risk assessment.
PSS joined the UK Maritime Pilots Association, the UK Harbour Masters Association, the British Ports Association, and the UK Major Ports Group, in updating the code.
Major updates include:
- Incorporation of the 2025 SOLAS V/23 regulations, illustrated through integration with the UKMPA Interactive Pilot Transfer Poster.
- Introduction of the ‘Climb Zones’ concept to reduce fall-from-height exposure.
- Reaffirmed guidance on transiting via the outboard route on pilot boats.
- A substantially refreshed reference section, aligned with Workboat Code 3, P&MSC GTGP and SOLAS V/23 requirements.
