Vacancy: Apprentice Port Health, Safety and Environment Technician
News |Published: May 15, 2026
Port Skills and Safety is pleased to announce that, following the success of its recent health and safety apprentice programme, the organisation is now recruiting for an Apprentice Port Health, Safety and Environment Technician.
The vacancy follows the successful progression of PSS’s previous apprentice, who developed their knowledge, skills, and experience through the programme before moving on to further their career within a health, safety and environment role. Their progression highlights the value of apprenticeships in developing future talent and creating meaningful career pathways within safety-critical industries.
The new apprentice will join the PSS team for a two-year apprenticeship programme, gaining valuable practical experience alongside a recognised SHE Technician Level 3 apprenticeship. The role will provide broad exposure to the port sector and the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable across a wide range of industries.
The role would suit someone who enjoys working with people, asking questions, solving problems, and learning how things work in the real world.
Jen Maddison, PSS Health, Safety and Culture Lead
The new apprentice will start with the organisation in early September, reporting to the health, safety and culture lead, Jen Maddison, with skills lead Angela Ward providing mentoring and learning support. “This is a great opportunity for someone with a passion for learning”, explained Angela.
“The apprentice will be supported throughout the programme to develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence, while gaining experience that is transferrable across ports and other safety-critical sectors.”
Jen Maddison, Health, Safety and Culture Lead, added: “We are looking for someone who is curious, proactive, and keen to get involved. The role would suit someone who enjoys working with people, asking questions, solving problems, and learning how things work in the real world. They do not need previous experience in ports, health and safety, data analysis, or the environment, but they should be enthusiastic about building their knowledge in these areas.”
The apprentice will work alongside the Health, Safety and Culture Lead to support a wide range of projects across safety, health, and culture. This will include helping to produce safety alerts and bulletins, supporting sector-wide data collection and analysis, contributing to guidance and member communications, and joining colleagues on visits to UK ports. The role will provide opportunities to meet people from across the industry, learn how ports operate, and understand how good health, safety, and environmental practice supports safe and successful operations.
The course covers topics such as statutory legislation; identifying, evaluating and mitigating hazards; how a safety, health and environment management system works; how people think and why they make decisions that can lead to risk; theories for incident causation and prevention.
PSS is committed to supporting skills development across the port sector and recognises the important role apprenticeships play in attracting and developing future talent. Apprenticeships provide individuals with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, build confidence, and develop industry-recognised skills, while also helping organisations strengthen their future workforce.
