Fishing Port Safety Project

The PSS fishing port safety project is aimed at improving safety for fishers using UK ports.

The project, supported by a grant from The Seafarers’ Charity, will give a voice to fishers using UK ports and also ensure that ports take their responsibility for the safety of fishers seriously. This project aims to develop a range of industry focused initiatives to ensure that ports do not dismiss safety concerns relating to fishing due to the industry’s unique characteristics and long established working practices.

PSS will therefore be working with fishing ports and fishers to encourage them to share common safety concerns, best practice and evaluate potential future developments. This could include, for example, adopting a collaborative approach to safety protocols, ensuring safe access and egress to fishing vessels, and cultivating and sustaining effective working relationships with stakeholders.

The fishing port safety project will review existing Safety in Ports guidance (SiPs) to ensure that they recognise the unique operations undertaken in fishing ports and will create a new SiP specifically for fishing ports.

Fishing port forum

As part of the project a regular Fishing Port Forum has been created, bringing ports together, encouraging open discussion and sharing good practice.

The forum meetings are held on Teams. The next meeting is on Tuesday 10 March 2026, 10:30 – 12:00.

If you would like to be involved, register your attendance to receive the Teams link for the meeting.

Fishing port visits

Port visits have been undertaken to meet face to face with port operators and relevant stakeholders, identifying any areas of concern and highlighting safe and effective operations.

If you would like to arrange a visit to your port, please get in touch
