Apprenticeships |Feb 13, 2026
As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we’re shining a spotlight on apprentices in the port sector.
Here we meet Zak Baker, an assistant coxswain and former apprentice at Harwich Haven Authority.
What inspired you to pursue a career at sea?
Knowing people who worked at sea, and hearing about the job made it something I wanted to do myself. Growing up by the sea, it felt like the natural path. I liked the idea of practical work with real responsibility.
How did you find your training on the apprenticeship programme?
I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s challenging at times, but in a good way. The mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience has helped me build confidence and understand why things are done a certain way on the water.
What skills and traits do you believe are most important as a deck rating / coxswain?
Good communication and teamwork are essential. You need to stay calm under pressure, be aware of your surroundings, and take responsibility for your actions. A willingness to learn, reliability, and a strong focus on safety are equally important.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting a career at sea?
If it’s something you’re interested in, give it a proper go. Turn up with a good attitude, be willing to learn, and put the effort in. You’ll make mistakes along the way, but don’t let them put you off – learn from them and move on. It’s not always easy, but it’s honest work and you get a lot back if you commit to it. Most importantly, enjoy it.
