Apprenticeships |Feb 11, 2026
During National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we’re meeting the apprentices working in ports. In this article, we meet Jorden Gleave who has recently completed the Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember Level 3 apprenticeship at Harwich Haven Authority.
What inspired you to pursue a career at sea?
From a young age I have always been drawn to the sea and fascinated about the maritime world. I wanted a role where I could navigate vessels across the world and learn the ropes hands-on. This opportunity offered something different from a traditional career path and give me the sense of adventure that I have pursued my whole life.

How did you find your training course?
The training course was both challenging and rewarding. It gave me a strong foundation of knowledge and showed me different opportunities in the industry. Not only has it provided me with the skills needed to become successful, but I am very fortunate now to continue my dream of becoming a navigation officer with a cadetship.

What skills and traits do you believe are most important as a marine apprentice?
Adaptability, teamwork and having a strong work ethic are essential. Being willing to learn, taking feedback, and staying calm under pressure is also important, as is having a positive attitude. As a woman in maritime, I am very proud to be working in this evolving industry, continuing to contribute to it becoming a more inclusive sector. I would encourage other women to also pursue their own career and explore paths in this industry.
