Case Study: Engineering maintenance technician (electrical) apprentice
Apprenticeships |Feb 10, 2026
As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we’re shining a light on the apprentices working in ports.
We hear from Lauren Luxton, an electrical apprentice at The Bristol Port Company. Lauren is working toward an Engineering Maintenance Technician – Single Discipline (Electrical) Level 3 apprenticeship.
Why did you choose The Bristol Port Company for your apprenticeship?
I chose to start my electrical apprenticeship at The Bristol Port Company because it offers a unique opportunity to train in an industry where no two days are the same. The variety of electrical systems and equipment across the port allows me to build strong practical skills while learning on the job and earning at the same time. The company is well known for investing in its apprentices and providing clear pathways for long-term career development.
What is the best part of the apprenticeship?
As the first female electrical apprentice at the port, I am proud to be challenging stereotypes and helping to show that engineering is a career open to everyone. I hope my journey encourages more young people, particularly women, to consider electrical apprenticeships and see the opportunities available within the port.
Where do you see yourself in the next ten years at The Bristol Port Company?
In the next ten years, I see myself as a fully qualified and experienced electrical engineer at the port, using the skills and knowledge I have gained to support operations and take on greater responsibility. I would like to pass on my experience to the next generation of apprentices, helping to train and mentor them in the same way I have been supported during my apprenticeship.
