Building the talent pipeline: PSS launches early careers data collection

News |

Published: Jun 3, 2025

PSS has launched a new data collection exercise to build a clearer picture of how early careers initiatives are being implemented across the UK port sector.

Member ports are being invited to take part in this first annual data return that will capture the extent and nature of early careers activity within their organisations. This consistent approach will provide a benchmark for future years and help track progress over time.

Until now, there has been no sector-wide view of how early careers initiatives are being adopted in UK ports. This work aims to fill that gap and provide vital insights into how the sector is supporting early talent through apprenticeships, graduate schemes, work experience, and other entry pathways.

The findings will inform PSS’s work to strengthen career progression routes, identify gaps, and share best practice across the industry.

Why this data matters

Early careers initiatives such as apprenticeships, graduate schemes, T Level industry placements, internships, supported internships, and traineeships play a vital role in attracting new talent into the port sector. However, a comprehensive, sector-wide picture of their current use has been lacking.

By gathering this data, PSS aims to:

  • Build a baseline understanding of how early careers pathways are being used today.
  • Identify areas where further promotion, information, or programme development may be needed.
  • Guide targeted support and resource allocation across the sector.
  • Measure progress over time by collecting data annually.
  • Strengthen the sector’s ability to respond to future skills challenges.

This work will also provide a crucial evidence base for PSS’s advocacy on behalf of the port sector, helping to ensure that early careers pathways are recognised and supported by policymakers, industry bodies, and education providers.

What data to provide

Members are asked to submit information covering early careers initiatives, including but not limited to:

Next steps

Data collection is open until Friday 25 July. Members are requested to download and complete the spreadsheet below, referring first to the guidance tab.

Supporting PSS work

The initiative directly supports the ambitions of the PSS Skills Strategy 2023–2028, which sets out a clear commitment to building a sustainable, skilled workforce by improving talent attraction, enhancing access to opportunities, and ensuring that ports have the skills needed for future growth and innovation.
