PSS CEO, Debbie Cavaldoro, and PSS Chair, Stuart Wallace, hosted the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) CEO, Sarah Albon, and Chief of Staff, Richard Jeffers on a visit to Forth Ports Grangemouth.

The visit provided an opportunity to update the HSE on PSS’s progress on its four strategic KPIs. Discussions covered the current round of revisions for the Safety in Ports (SiP) guidance, the use of data to drive further safety improvements, and the importance of skills to support safe working practices.

The HSE reaffirmed its commitment to supporting PSS and the SiP guidance, particularly where new SiPs are being developed. Ms Albon confirmed that the sector is considered mature in its approach to safety and committed to helping PSS with safety data wherever possible.

She encouraged the sector to ‘keep doing what it is doing,’ and was impressed by the high level of collaboration demonstrated through PSS.

The visit also provided an opportunity to give the HSE a first-hand insight into a day on the life of a port. The necessity for ports to be adaptable was highlighted when the vessel due to be observed was delayed reaching the port. However, the team was able to go up one of the gantry cranes and take a trip on the pilot boat.

The visit was a success and helped PSS continue to demonstrate to stakeholders that the port sector takes a responsibility approach to safety.

Getting out and meeting members and highlighting the important work they do, is a vital part of PSS’s work. To organise a tour of your port, please get in touch.
