Port industry incident statistics |Jan 20, 2024
Overall performance
The annual analysis of port industry incidents highlights that safety performance decreased slightly in 2022 compared to gains made in 2020 and 2021.
Lost time injuries and incidents reported under RIDDOR
The number of lost time injuries (LTI) reported in 2022 was 38 per cent higher than in 2021, with May 2022 having the highest number of LTIs in any one month. Additionally, RIDDOR reported incidents were 11 per cent higher in 2022 compared to 2021. The overall trend of increased incidents was observed across most individual contributing members, however the increase in total contributing members and workers may account for some of these increases.
Immediate Causes
The report finds that the top immediate causes of reported LTIs in 2022 were similar to previous years and included slipping, tripping, and falling on the same level; being hit by moving, flying or falling objects; and being injured while handling, lifting, or carrying items.
“There are always many interconnected factors which can drive improvements or reductions in health and safety performance. However, as a sector, there are some key areas which can be critically reviewed as part of overall health and safety management on site. These include open reporting and investigation of incidents, proactive engagement on site, proactive maintenance of equipment, clear communication, health and safety training and emergency preparedness.”
