Injury during lifting operation on general cargo vessel

Date: 6 April 2017
Location: a U.K. Port

A stevedore working on loading a conventional cargo vessel became entangled in a lifting strop as the lifting frame was lifted out of the ship.  The stevedore fell 6m to the floor of the ship’s hold.  Prior to lifting all those present indicated to the Banksman that they were clear and in a safe position.  The Stevedore suffered the following injuries: small bleed to the brain and a fractured cheek bone.

Recommended Actions :

  • Re-assess the risk in your operations of persons becoming entangled in or struck by cargo, lifting equipment or lifting accessories
  • Review your control measures to ensure that persons in the vicinity are in positions of safety when cargo, lifting equipment or lifting accessories are being lifted and/or moved
