The national launch of Safer Ports Initiative 2 (SPI 2) took place on 10 May 2006 on HQS Wellington, London, and was hosted by the PSS Chairman, Des Crampton. More than 80 industry representatives attended the event.

The speakers reflected the strong partnership approach to the Initiative:

  • Minister of State for Transport – Dr Stephen Ladyman MP
  • Group Chief Executive of ABP Holdings plc – Bo Lerenius CBE
  • Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission – Bill Callaghan
  • Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency – John Astbury CBE
  • Senior Policy Officer in the Organisation and Services Department at the Trades Union Congress – Hugh Robertson

SPI 2 will focus on promoting the business case for an integrated approach to health, safety and skills. It will build on the progress achieved in the first phase of SPI through the central themes of:

  • Leadership
  • Sensible risk management
  • Industry standards, qualifications and training opportunities
  • Worker involvement
  • Sharing good practice and partnership working

PSS will now work with the HSE to deliver a series of regional workshops to promote SPI 2 to a wide UK audience. If you would be interested in hosting a regional workshop we would be happy to provide further information.

A regional event is to be held at Milford Haven on the 7th October 2008.
