Sector Qualifications Strategy

Considerable work had been done in 2006, through Regional Skills Workshops and industry consultations, to complete the Ports Sector Qualifications Strategy (SQS).

Skills Network

In 2009 PSS will seek to establish a skills network aimed at engaging the industry in the national skills agenda and for determining skills needs outside of national qualifications.

Managing Safely in Ports

Managing Safely in Ports is a PSS tailored course developed for the ports sector. It is built on the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health’s (IOSH) generic course, Managing Safely.

Health and Safety Guidance Project

The Health and Safety Guidance Project is one of the main priorities of PSS as this will eventually replace the current guidance “Safety in Docks”.

Report of the 20th Annual First Aid Conference

The 2008 First Aid Conference for the Ports Industry was held in the Leapark Hotel, Grangemouth on 20 November and hosted by Forth Ports PLC.

Report on the 2008 UK Championship for the Grand Prior Trophy

This year’s UK Championship for the Grand Prior Trophy was held in Coton House, Rugby on 4th December. The venue was provided by the Royal Mail and the event sponsored by Tarmac Ltd.

Arrangements for 2009 Competitions

The 20th National First Aid Competitions will be held on Thursday 7 May 2009 in Llandudno.

Safer Ports Initiative website

A new website for the Safer Ports Initiative has been launched and can be seen at www.saferports.org.uk.

First aid requirements for dive teams

The ACoP (inland/inshore) requires that at least two members of the dive team hold first aid qualifications. This qualification is normally the First Aid at Work certificate issued by the Red Cross, St John’s or similar.

Hepatitis B injections for first aiders

The Employment Medical Advisory Service (EMAS) recommends that employers first assess the risk to first aiders of infection and act based on that assessment.
