Crane Boom Hoist Gearbox Failure

A major UK container terminal has reported to PSSL an incident involving the fatigue failure of a boom hoist gearbox on a Morris quayside, rail mounted gantry crane, which was installed circa 1986. Initial investigations have highlighted the possibility of a design fault which might be applicable to other Morris cranes of that era.
