What is Biomass?
Biomass is organic non-fossil material collectively for all plant and animal material. A number of different forms of biomass can be burned or digested by animals to produce energy. Biomass is a very resourceful material and can be used to produce heat, electricity and a combination of heat and power (electricity). In the United Kingdom one can find some of the most developed projects using Biomass to generate electricity in Europe.
A working group consisting of PSS, HSE, Forestry Commission and other interested stakeholders has been established to examine the issues with transporting, handling and storage of Bio Mass products
The first meeting was held in July, which was hosted by the Bristol Port Company. The topics under discussion were the various types of bio mass products and their properties, spontaneous combustion, UN number allocation, explosive atmosphere conditions, Phyto Sanitary Controls occupational asthma caused by dust particles.
NB: Phytosanitary is the inspection intended to prevent the spread and the introduction across national boundaries of pests of plants and plant products.
The next meeting has been arranged for 1st October where it is hoped a representative from Drax power station will be attending to give a talk on their experience to date with bio mass fuels.
