Health and Safety Guidance Project

The Health and Safety Guidance Project is one of the main priorities of PSS as this will eventually replace the current guidance “Safety in Docks”.

We have been advised that the Dock Regulations will also be revoked, as part of the HSE’s simplification plan to aid compliance.

The working group met on 25 February 2009.

The Lighting guidance is being expanded to include guidance on measuring lighting levels. The General Cargo Handling guidance has been formatted as a PSS Guidance & Interpretation Series document which will be available to Subscribers through the PSS website. The document is being proof read for any final amendments.

A first draft of the Mooring guidance has been submitted. The topic lead is referring to MCA and Nautical Institute guidance to make sure the new guidance will be complimentary to the existing published guidance.

Drafting of guidance for Container Handling and Ro-Ro has begun. Work Boats and Timber Handling have been identified as additional topics to be covered, and drafting has begun.

A gap analysis of Safety in Docks (SID) has been performed to identify any useful text and areas not covered by more recent legislation. This will be fed into the various topic guidance documents.

It is expected that the project will be completed by April 2010.
