Foundation Degree Framework

The Ports Foundation Degree (FD) framework will provide a flexible qualification capable of meeting the industry need for qualifications for four career pathways: Harbour Masters, Marine Pilots, Vessel Traffic Services and Port Management. Furthermore, the Ports FD sits within an umbrella Framework for the Maritime sector. The Maritime framework will include separate legs for shipping, ports and other maritime interests to facilitate the future transfer of seagoing skills into the ports sector.

The Foundation Degree will be a two year programme specifically aimed at developing new entrants through learning at an academic institution and work placements. The first year of the programme will introduce learners to the ports environment and develop generic knowledge and management skill, whilst learners will focus on one of the four career pathways during their second year.

It is envisaged that the second year of the degree would also be available as a separately achievable qualification that would better meet the needs of existing personnel. A process of accreditation of prior learning and experience will give access to those simply wishing to demonstrate certification with an industry approved, NOS based qualification.

PSS have appointed consultants and will be working to complete the framework by August 2009. This will allow for programme delivery from 2010 academic year. There will be industry involvement in the development work through working groups. Once a robust draft is available, there will be wider industry consultation to agree the framework.
